    This thesis tries to answer the question how to predict the reaction of the stock market to news articles using the latest suitable developments in Natural Language Processing. This is done using text classiffication where a new article is matched to a category of articles which have a certain influence on the stock price. The thesis first discusses why analysis of news articles is a feasible approach to predicting the stock market and why analysis of past prices should not be build upon. From related work in this domain two main design choices are extracted; what to take as features for news articles and how to couple them with the changes in stock price. This thesis then suggests which different features are possible to extract from articles resulting in a template for features which can deal with negation, favorability, abstracts from companies and uses domain knowledge and synonyms for generalization. To couple the features to changes in stock price a survey is given of several text classiffication techniques from which it is concluded that Support Vector Machines are very suitable for the domain of stock prices and extensive features. The system has been tested with a unique data set of news articles for which results are reported that are signifficantly better than random. The results improve even more when only headlines of news articles are taken into account. Because the system is only tested with closing prices it cannot concluded that it will work in practice but this can be easily tested if stock prices during the days are available. The main suggestions for feature work are to test the system with this data and to improve the filling of the template so it can also be used in other areas of favorability analysis or maybe even to extract interesting information out of texts

    ļ»æAn Answer Explanation Model for Probabilistic Database Queries

    Following the availability of huge amounts of uncertain data, coming from diverse ranges of applications such as sensors, machine learning or mining approaches, information extraction and integration, etc. in recent years, we have seen a revival of interests in probabilistic databases. Queries over these databases result in probabilistic answers. As the process of arriving at these answers is based on the underlying stored uncertain data, we argue that from the standpoint of an end user, it is helpful for such a system to give an explanation on how it arrives at an answer and on which uncertainty assumptions the derived answer is based. In this way, the user with his/her own knowledge can decide how much confidence to place in this probabilistic answer. \ud The aim of this paper is to design such an answer explanation model for probabilistic database queries. We report our design principles and show the methods to compute the answer explanations. One of the main contributions of our model is that it fills the gap between giving only the answer probability, and giving the full derivation. Furthermore, we show how to balance verifiability and influence of explanation components through the concept of verifiable views. The behavior of the model and its computational efficiency are demonstrated through an extensive performance study

    We propose a unified and complete solution for expert finding in organizations, including not only expertise identification, but also expertise selection functionality. The latter two include the use of implicit and explicit preferences of users on meeting each other, as well as localization and planning as important auxiliary processes. We also propose a solution for privacy protection, which is urgently required in view of the huge amount of privacy sensitive data involved. Various parts are elaborated elsewhere, and we look forward to a realization and usage of the proposed system as a whole

    The luminescence properties of various transition metal ions in inorganic host lattices have been studied in this thesis, with a strong emphasis on their temperature-dependent behavior also in relation with application as phosphors in white light LEDs for lighting and broad band NIR LEDs for sensing.     Precision of orthodontic cephalometric measurements on ultra low dose-low dose CBCT reconstructed cephalograms

    ObjectivesTo analyze differences in variation of orthodontic diagnostic measurements on lateral cephalograms reconstructed from ultra low dose-low dose (ULD-LD) cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans (RLC) as compared to variation of measurements on standard lateral cephalograms (SLC), and to determine if it is justifiable to replace a traditional orthodontic image set for an ULD-LD CBCT with a reconstructed lateral cephalogram.Material and methodsULD-LD CBCT images and SLCs were made of forty-three dry human skulls. From the ULD-LD CBCT dataset, a lateral cephalogram was reconstructed (RLC). Cephalometric landmarks (13 skeletal and 7 dental) were identified on both SLC and RLC twice in two sessions by two calibrated observers. Thirteen cephalometric variables were calculated. Variations of measurements, expressed as standard deviations of the 4 measurements on SLC and RLC, were analyzed using a paired sample t-test. Differences in the number of observations deviating &gt;= 2.0 mm or degrees from the grand mean between SLC and RLC were analyzed using a McNemar test.ResultsMean SDs for 7 out of 13 variables were significantly smaller for SLCs than those for RLCs, but differences were small. For 9 out of 13 variables, there was no significant difference between SLC and RLC for the number of measurements outside the range of 2 mm or degrees.ConclusionsBased on the lower radiation dose and the small differences in variation in cephalometric measurements on reconstructed LC compared to standard dose LC, ULD-LD CBCT with reconstructed LC should be considered for orthodontic diagnostic purposes.</p

    Temperature quenching of Cr3+ in ASc(Si1-xGex)2O6 (A=Li/Na) solid solutions

    Blue absorbing near infrared (NIR) emitting phosphors are a promising class of materials for phosphor converted NIR LEDs, which can be used in compact NIR spectrometers. Preferably, these phosphors have a broad emission spectrum and show negligible luminescence quenching at LED operating temperatures (100 Ā°C). Here, we investigated ASc(Si1-xGex)2O6 (A = Li/Na, x = 0,0.2,0.4,0.6,0.8,1) solid solutions doped with Cr3+ to tune and optimize the emission maximum and bandwidth to cover the full 700ā€“1100 nm range. With increasing Ge content an emission redshift was observed, along with emission band broadening at intermediate Ge/Si ratio, which is explained by disorder around Cr3+ in the second coordination sphere (mixed Si/Ge). Temperature dependent emission spectra and luminescence decay curves were measured between 90 K and 670 K to determine the quenching temperature TQ. With increasing Ge content TQ drops from 550 K to below 400 K. Interestingly, Cr3+ emission in the highly symmetric site in LiScSi2O6 shows a strongly temperature dependent lifetime before thermal quenching sets in. DFT calculations on LiScSi2O6 indicate that asymmetric vibrations at the Sc site are involved and calculated phonon energies were confirmed by measuring FTIR. Our study indicates that a solid solution is a promising way to increase the emission bandwidth. However, with increasing Ge content TQ decreases. An optimum Ge-content in LiSc(Si1-xGex)2O6:Cr3+ is x = 0.2ā€“0.4 as it redshifts the NIR band maximum close to 900 nm and offers a FWHM bandwidth around 180 nm, while keeping the thermal quenching temperature high enough for application in NIR-LEDs
